When They See Us
When They See Us is undoubtedly a difficult watch, but it shines a light on the judicial system and its failings. When a woman is assaulted in Central Park, a group of Black teenagers—later known as the Central Park Five—are charged with the crime. There’s no evidence to support their arrest, but they’re coerced into confessions and imprisoned anyway, leading to a years-long battle for exoneration.
2Unbelievable
In Unbelievable, Kaitlyn Dever stars as Marie Adler, a teenage girl who’s accused of falsely reporting a rape. After an early-morning assault, Marie tells the police what happened, hoping for support. But instead the detectives claim she’s lying. Just as Marie begins to lose hope, two female detectives notice that her story appears connected to other assaults around the country. If their suspicions are correct, they can exonerate Marie and catch her attacker.
3The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst
The Jinx is a documentary about real estate titan Robert Durst, a key suspect in the unsolved disappearance of his wife and the murders of their family friends Susan Berman and Morris Black. Over a decade of research went into this two-part series, which includes an exclusive interview with Durst. Similar to Under the Bridge, this winding tale investigates how people with power can manipulate the law to work in their favor.

4The Act
The Act stars Joey King as Gypsy-Rose Blanchard, a young girl trying to escape her helicopter mother. Gypsy is told that she’s sick and entirely unable to care for herself, but when the girl begins to question her mother’s authority, she learns a horrifying secret that leads to a deadly confrontation. The result is a tense and heartbreaking trial that asks how some horrors go unnoticed.
5Candy
I know it’s a cliche, but Candy really is a story you have to see to believe. I don’t want to spoil it, but the show follows a suburban mom who gets away with murder. The evidence points to her—she’s the only key suspect—and still she’s able to circumvent the legal system. Similar to Under the Bridge, Candy reveals the failings of well-respected police officers.
6A Friend of the Family
In A Friend of the Family, a young girl named Jan Broberg is kidnapped not once but twice. How? Her captor is a charming family friend who slips through the cracks. He looks like everyone else in the neighborhood. Surely, he must be harmless. Nope. In this case, everyone fails Jan. Her parents. The police. Her neighbors. Everyone. The result is a harrowing true story about grooming.

7The Girl from Plainville
The Girl from Plainville centers on modern teenagers, similar to Under the Bridge. It stars Elle Fanning as Michelle Carter, a young woman who made headlines in 2014 when her boyfriend, Conrad Roy III, committed suicide. As the investigation unfolds, we learn that Carter might not be an innocent bystander. In fact, she might be a suspect—and in order to crack the case, the police have to challenge their beliefs about what kids are capable of.
8The Staircase
Was Kathleen Peterson’s death a grisly murder or a terrible accident? The Staircase, which is inspired by a true story, chronicles the investigation of the Peterson family after Kathleen is found dead at the bottom of a staircase in her house. Like Under the Bridge, this series questions the motives of Kathleen’s inner circle. The investigation causes the Petersons to fracture—especially when Michael, Kathleen’s supposedly doting husband, becomes a suspect.
