Ernest Hemingway was born in 1899 and the eldest son to a wealthy family. Although he grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, Hemingway has written fondly about his childhood summers in Walloon Lake, Michigan.

Historical//Getty ImagesWhile serving on the Italian front, specifically along the Piave delta, Hemingway was struck by an Austrian mortar shell and wounded. He was awarded an Italian Medal of Valor for his service. His time during the war later served as inspiration for his novel, A Farewell to Arms.

The couple got married in 1921 and moved to Paris, where he fell in with the American literary crowd, such as James Joyce, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein. After two years, they moved to Toronto, where Hemingway worked for the Toronto Star.

Hemingway divorced Richardson in 1927 and married Pfeiffer that same year. He later used the experience as inspiration for his novel, A Moveable Feast.

Similarly to what happened between Richardson and Pfeiffer, Gellhorn was a friend to Hemingway and his wife before their affair began. The couple became involved as they traveled together covering the Spanish Civil War. By 1940, Hemingway was divorced again.

However, as Gellhorn continued to work as a war correspondent, the couple's marriage suffered. They divorced in 1945 and the union was the shortest of all of Hemingway's marriages.
