This year, the Golden Globes did something new. And no, we’re not talking about asking Jo Koy to host. This year, they created the Cinematic Box Office Achievement Award to celebrate high-performing films. On Sunday night, the accolade went to director Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which generated over 1.3 billion in global sales. (Wowza.)
Gerwig and actor Margot Robbie, who starred as Barbie, expressed their gratitude in a joint acceptance speech. “We would like to dedicate this to every single person on the planet who dressed up and went to the greatest place on earth: the movie theaters,” Robbie said. Then Gerwig called the movie, “the greatest, most joyful show of craftsmanship and passion” she’d ever seen before Robbie concluded their speech with a message to the HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association). “Thank you so much to the Golden Globes for creating an award that celebrates movie fans,” she said. “This is a movie about Barbie, but it’s also a movie about humans. It’s about you. We made it for you, and we made it with love. Thank you for loving it back.”
If you haven’t traveled to Barbie Land yet, consider this your sign to watch the award-winning film. As of December 15th, 2023, Barbie has been available to stream on Max. If you’re just catching up (perhaps you were busy watching Oppenheimer?), Barbie initially debuted in theaters on July 23, 2023. The film follows Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling), who live in a perfectly pink-hued universe. As dolls, they don’t have any reason to question their existence—why would you when your job is beach?—but that changes when Barbie starts malfunctioning. The solution is somewhere in the real world, but when Barbie and Ken are thrust into modern society, they find that Barbie hasn't solved all the world's problems.
The star-studded film features fabulous performances from America Ferrera, Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Ariana Greenblatt, Issa Rae, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, and more. The film also includes an impressive soundtrack from Mark Ronson, with pop hits from Lizzo and Dua Lipa, a “Barbie Girl” remix by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice, and even a hilarious solo performance from Gosling’s Ken. So, grab a spot on the couch, folks—you'll finally be able to rewatch Barbie as many times as your heart desires.
