This story contains spoilers for Leave the World Behind.
Elon Musk wants to clear the air about his beloved Teslas. The luxury electric vehicles are featured in Sam Esmail’s new doomsday drama, Leave the World Behind, which stars Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Myha’la Herrold, and Mahershala Ali. The film follows two families who are forced to work together during apocalyptic conditions. In one terrifying scene, a fleet of Teslas loses control and nearly kills Roberts’s character.
The moment shows how hackers could, hypothetically, turn any piece of technology into a weapon of mass destruction. Apparently, Musk didn’t get the memo. Or maybe he didn’t see the film before critiquing it. Either way, when Netflix posted a clip of the scene on X (formerly known as Twitter), the tech billionaire fired off a quick response. “Teslas can charge from solar panels even if the world goes fully Mad Max and there is no more gasoline!” he wrote.

Cool, dude. The thing is, in this scenario, the Teslas' ability to self-activate isn’t the issue. The problem is the way that capitalism, technology, and greed collide—fueling a moment of sheer terror. The solar panel technology is just a plus! Though he hoped to educate the masses, Musk is now being mocked for his commentary on his own platform. "The best thing about Leave The World Behind is that it triggered Elon," one user wrote on X. Another person chimed in, saying that Musk missed the point. "They were self-driving Teslas, driving themselves to that road via GPS, to crash into each other blocking the way out," they said. "Another reason why this type of tech is dumb."
Musk hasn’t said more about the film, but I hope he returns with more commentary. I’d love to know Musky's thoughts about the ending. If you haven’t seen it already, Leave the World Behind is available to stream on Netflix.
