Reactions to Player 278, Ashley

Squid Game is (mostly) a game of chance. In the popular reality competition—which is a spinoff of the South Korean dystopia drama, Squid Game—one game sees contestants simply roll a die to decide if they get to stay in the race. Still, if you want to win Squid Game: The Challenge's the massive $4.56 million cash prize, you have to look our for yourself. Even when it's more advantageous to work as a group, some people show their stubborn side.

In the second batch of episodes, which released this week, audiences saw the remaining 20 contestants reach the dreaded Glass Bridge. Players were forced to cross one by one as they chose between two potential paths forward. Choose the wrong way and you're eliminated. It's basically a 50/50 shot, but you'll never find the correct path if you take too long to argue about who jumps. So, after numbers are drawn, the contestants decide as a group to spread the risk evenly by only jumping once. There's just one problem—Ashley Tolbert (Player 278) doesn't agree.

After a contestant ahead of her chooses the wrong path, Ashley calls her "stupid as hell." She refuses to budge, saying that it's more advantageous for her t, "sit your ass back and relax." The 30-year-old civil rights investigator's Netflix profile stated that she "loves puzzles," but she angered the whole group when she chose to sit out of this one.

"I turn around and I see #278 and she’s not moving at all," fan-favorite Trey (Player 301) said via voiceover after making his first jump. "I’ve taken my 50/50 chance. It’s time for #278 to step up and take hers." Trey is later eliminated—while Ashley moves on. It's a bizarre choice to be the one person who sits out of a team activity, especially when players are often given the chance to eliminate others. "I think #278 is selfish for not advancing for the team," Mai (Player 287) said after crossing the bridge. "That has shown her character."
