Release Date, Cast, Plot Details

At long last, All The Light We Cannot See is finally headed to Netflix as a miniseries. The period drama, which is based on Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, premieres on November 2.

Described by Netflix's Tudum as “emotional” and “intense,” All The Light We Cannot See transports viewers to World War II, amidst Nazi occupation in France. The series is directed by Shawn Levy, who hopes that his adaptation properly captures the magic of the novel. In an interview with Tudum, he said, “My central message to fans of the book—and I’m screaming this from the top of the mountain here—is, ‘I’m as big a fan as you. [My goal was] to do justice to this gorgeous novel that touched me deeply.”

All The Light We Cannot See was initially released in 2014. After “devouring” the novel, as Levy explained, he wanted to turn the war saga into a series. Levy said he was most drawn to themes of “innocence in the face of darkness” and “hope in the face of evil.” When he inquired about the rights, the novel had already been purchased by a team who wanted to turn it into a movie. Eventually, the deal fell through, and Levy was able to swoop in and adapt the novel into a stunning four-part series. “There is too much story for two hours,” Levy said. “The sheer runtime that limited series affords allows us to do justice more thoroughly to the source material [so that] it is indeed the novel come to life rather than the novel cut down to fit a runtime or format.”

Ahead of its premiere, Netflix released a trailer teasing what’s to come. Check it out above, then keep reading for everything we know about All The Light We Cannot See.
