Release Date, Trailer and Spoilers

When it comes to prestige TV – or at least, expensive-looking TV – it’s hard to know what’s going to land with viewers. But Presumed Innocent, a did-he-do-it legal thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal (which we called “slow, steady and exceedingly watchable) has turned out to be the most successful show of the year so far for Apple TV+.

According to Forbes, the streamer says Presumed Innocent has been its most-watched drama of all time, which is presumably why they announced the second series before the finale has even landed on the platform.

Given that the series was previously a 1990 film starring Harrison Ford, based on a book by Scott Turow, we can presume the endings are the same, which might make it tricky to pick up where series one ends, in which case: what can we expect from a second series?

When is Presumed Innocent 2 out?

The last episode of the original series streams on 24 July, so the follow-up series won’t be for a while, and at the very earliest in late 2025.

Is there a trailer for Presumed Innocent 2?

Not yet – you’ll have to get to the end of the original series first.

Who is in the cast for Presumed Innocent 2?

That’s all up in the air for now, though, although it looks like there might be a character or two taken from the first series who will link it to the following series.

It’s unlikely that Gyllenhaal will return – at least as the main character – but he is staying on behind the camera as an executive producer. All we have confirmed so far is that J.J. Abrams, Rachel Rusch Rich, Dustin Thomason, and Matthew Tinker are all set to return as executive producers, as well as David E. Kelley and author Scott Turow.

What’s going to happen in Presumed Innocent 2?

While pre-production on this new series is only just starting, what we do know is that it’s going to be an entirely new case. The official release said that the second outing “will unfold around a suspenseful, brand new case.”

There’s a possibility that the second series could be based on Turow’s The Burden of Proof, the 1990 follow up to 1987’s Presumed Innocent. Set in the same area of Illinois, the story follows Sandy Stern after the events at the end of Presumed Innocent.

However Turow wrote a follow-up to Presumed Innocent, 2011’s Innocent, which pits Rusty Sabich (Gyllenhall) and Tommy Molto (played by Peter Sarsgaard) against each other, 20 years later after the mysterious death of Rusty’s wife. So that could also be chosen as the basis for the new storyline.
