Who Is the Last Jedi

Ever since the title of Star Wars VIII was revealed earlier this year, fans have been agonizing over who, exactly, is the last Jedi. Maybe it's Luke! Maybe it's Rey! Maybe it's Jar Jar! Maybe it's been inside all of us all along! Some have gone as far to consider the title translation in multiple languages for hints that Jedi could also be plural. But, with three months to go until the release, Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson gave a coy answer to the question in an interview with the New York Times:

It’s in the opening crawl of The Force Awakens. Luke Skywalker, right now, is the last Jedi. There’s always wiggle room in these movies—everything is from a certain point of view—but coming into our story, he is the actual last of the Jedi. And he’s removed himself and is alone on this island, for reasons unknown.

Okay, very clever, Johnson, but you're not fooling anyone. Yes, it's pretty obvious that at the beginning of the movie, Luke is the last Jedi. We know that. But, he seems to be pretty clearly implying that by the end of the movie someone else will be the last Jedi—almost certainly Rey.

What we can gather from early descriptions of the film is that Luke has fled to solitude after the rise of his pupil turned to the dark side, Kylo Ren. He's become disillusioned on the Jedi, and needs some convincing to teach another student who might be seduced to the dark side. Poor guy is having kind of a sci-fi mid-life crisis. Give him a break! So, yes, for now, Luke is the last Jedi. But probably not for long.
