Why '1883' Won't Have a Second Season

This post contains spoilers for the season finale of 1883.

We know death now—it has no fangs. It also does not have a second season. After a poignant and devastating 10-episode run, it has been confirmed that creator Taylor Sheridan's 1883, an explosive prequel to Yellowstone, is a one-and-done outing. Sort of. At the end of February, 1883 wrapped up, killing off two main characters in the process. That was originally confounding as to where the series would head, especially considering that the remaining characters were literally spread out across the American northwest when the screen faded to black.

And now, in an interview with Deadline, Sheridan confirmed that 1883 was not an ongoing series, so much as it was a 10-hour film. A limited series, if you will. For fans of good storytelling, that's a relief. The series perfectly wrapped up the narrative it was telling as the Dutton family made their way up The Oregon Trail. (Plus, as you know, shows that continue on far too long are a personal beef of mine.) But for die hard fans who want more, hope is not lost entirely.

What Sheridan says is that he sees series like 1883 as a type of anthology series. That means the next up, set 49 years in the future, is 1932. He describes it as a "peek through a different window into a different era." The creator goes onto say, "Again, I don’t think of any of these as spinoffs, but rather as complete stories that have common roots."

Read on to hear what we know about the next iteration that comes after 1883.

When is Season Two of 1883?

During an investor call in February, Paramount+ confirmed that it would be ordering more episodes, but it sounds a lot like those episodes are actually going to be the next iteration, 1932, set in the future with a different cast, of Sheridan's saga. At present, there is no official return date for the series, but with Sheridan's other projects in the works, it's likely whatever comes will debut in 2022 around the same time it premiered in 2021, which is to say very late in the year.

Who Will Be in 1932?

That is also a mystery. Obviously we won't be seeing Sam Elliott or Isabel May making any appearances considering their untimely demise. Age-wise, the only character that reasonably could be in 1932 would be John Dutton Sr, though he'd be played by a different character.

What Will 1932 Be About?

There hasn't been much information released about the upcoming prequel series, but as Sheridan says in his Deadline interview, "My goal with the next one would be that you could never have seen 1883 or Yellowstone, and still have a fully realized experience as a viewer." The synopsis preview for 1932 is that the limited series will follow the Dutton family out in Montana as they navigate the difficulties that come with prohibition and the Great Depression.

While you don't need to have watched Yellowstone to see the series, any Yellowstone fan knows—Duttons, minus alcohol, means sure-fire violence.
